Bengaline vs Scuba Crepe vs Ponte: Choosing the Right Smart Stretch Fabric

If you're sewing smart trousers, a pencil skirt or a fitted dress, you'll usually be choosing between three fabrics: bengaline, scuba crepe and ponte roma. They all offer structure with stretch — but they behave quite differently. Here's how to pick.

Bengaline: the tailored one

Bengaline has a fine crosswise rib and a firm, crisp handle. It stretches mainly across the width, holds a sharp crease, and resists wrinkling brilliantly — which is why it's the classic choice for smart trousers and workwear. If you want a polished, office-ready finish that still lets you move, bengaline is the one.

Best for: trousers, pencil skirts, structured dresses, waistcoats.

Scuba crepe: the sculpting one

Scuba crepe is a smooth, springy double knit with a subtle crepe texture on the surface. It has more body than bengaline, skims over everything, and needs no lining — seams stay clean and the fabric holds silhouettes beautifully. It's the secret behind most shop-bought bodycon dresses.

Best for: bodycon and fitted dresses, occasionwear, structured skirts, statement sleeves.

Ponte roma: the comfortable one

Ponte is the softest of the three — a stable double knit with excellent recovery that feels closer to a heavy jersey. It's the most forgiving to sew and the most comfortable for all-day wear, while still looking smart.

Best for: blazers, pinafores, leggings-style trousers, shift dresses, kids' smart clothes.

• Want a crisp, tailored trouser? Bengaline.
• Want a sculpted, figure-hugging dress? Scuba crepe.
• Want smart but secretly-comfy? Ponte roma.

Sewing notes

All three sew well on a regular machine with a stretch needle and a narrow zigzag. Bengaline frays a little (finish your seams); scuba and ponte barely fray at all. Press scuba on low heat only — high heat can leave shine marks.
